Characters currently in-game: N/A
Triggers/Fears/Squicks: Nothing really triggers me, and other than pretty common squicks (anything involving toilet stuff, parent/child incest) I can't think of anything that would be a huge problem.
Character Motivation:
Given the fact that Garrus is arriving in the middle of a galactic war, it really would only take the guarantee that his friends, family, planet, and galaxy would be able to be saved. The chance to save everyone by submitting to a few tests? He'll take those odds in an instant, as sketchy as the whole situation might end up being.
VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Garrus Vakarian
Age: Around 29. Though never mentioned in-game, writers have indicated that he is slightly younger than the protagonist, Commander Shepard, who is 31 during Mass Effect 3. As humans and turians have roughly the same lifespan, he'd be considered the same age as a human.
Physical Appearance: Insert Shape of Water Joke Here
Point in Timeline: Mass Effect 3, Post-Priority: Palavan
World Description: Mass Effect takes place roughly 200 years into the future, in our galaxy. All information about the world can be found throughout the wiki page.
History/Background: Here!
In addition, as the timeline of Mass Effect can change with player choice, here are a few of the major decisions made by the player character that impact Garrus and the world at large:
Mass Effect 1
↪ Wrex survived Virmire
↪ Kaidan survived Virmire, Ashley sacrificed
↪ Saved the Citadel Council
↪ Saved the Rachni Queen
↪ Bring Down the Sky Competed - Hostages saved, Balak at large
↪ Anderson is selected for councillor
↪ Garrus is encouraged to place more value in regulations.
Mass Effect 2
↪ Everyone survived the suicide mission
↪ Destroyed the Collector Base
↪ Destroyed Geth Heretics
↪ Tali spared from exile
↪ Arrival, Overlord, and Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC's completed
↪ Shepard did not allow Garrus to shoot Sidonis
↪ Shepard romanced Garrus
As Garrus is from early Mass Effect 3, other than the recruitment of Javik (a DLC that can be completed very early in the game), no major decisions (including the status of the romance, which Shepard can call off immediately after reuniting with no hard feelings) have been made.
Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
↪ LOYAL - Above all else, Garrus is immensely loyal to his friends. While many of the crew members from the first game have massive reservations about working with the human supremacist terrorist organization Cerberus, Garrus agrees to come along with Shepard, no questions asked. This continues throughout the game, where if present, he defends Shepard from a former crew member that claims they betrayed everything they stood for. Finally, in the third game, despite being one of the highest ranking members of the turian military, Garrus leaves active combat to again serve with Shepard aboard the Normandy, because of how much he respects and trusts his friend.
↪ JUST - Garrus is also an individual with a very strong sense of justice, no matter the cost. It is this sense that first leads him to Shepard's crew, feeling that he can accomplish more good working with someone who is above the law, as he first got into C-Sec specifically to help others. And, despite Shepard convincing him that there are some values to certain regulations, it is this same sense of justice that leads him to Omega after their apparent death to take down dangerous criminals. Regardless of his methods, Garrus is a man who always strives to do the right thing, no matter the cost.
↪ AFFABLE - When it comes to his friends, Garrus is often a pretty friendly and entertaining guy, and particularly seems to enjoy some light-hearted teasing. His sarcasm and teasing nature is also evidenced in the second game, when he teases Tali about the conversations that the used to have on the elevators, or in the third game, where he and Wrex trade friendly barbs with one another (with Wrex noting he had to be friends with the "one turian who thinks he's funny"). Even in more dire situations, as a coping mechanism, he will occasionally inject some dry humour (such as during Mordin's loyalty mission, where he casually remarks that while the current place they're in isn't exactly fun to fight in, he likes fighting in antique shops "but only if they're classy"), though unlike some of the other characters, he never goes too far with this, and knows when it's appropriate to be serious.
↪ NATURAL LEADER - Throughout the series, Garrus grows into a formidable leader in his own right. This is first evidenced on in Mass Effect 2 on Omega, where he led a team of mercenaries against the station's crime, and continues on to the suicide mission, where he is one of the three correct choices to lead various fire teams (meaning that if he is chosen, there will be no casualties). In Mass Effect 3, he is a top advisor to the Primarch (ruler) of Palaven, and is saluted by turian generals, who defer to his knowledge of the situation.
Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
↪ INSENSITIVE - While a genuinely friendly guy, Garrus can be incredibly (and often inadvertently) insensitive to other people and races with different life experiences to him. Two egregious examples of this are in Mass Effect 1, where he essentially calls their Krogan teammate, Wrex, a "credit to his race", and when he tells his Quarian teammate Tali, that her people are entirely responsible for a good chunk of the current galactic woes. And although this trait has toned down considerably by Mass Effect 3 (to the point of apologizing to Tali for his comments), he still first expresses admiration about a doomsday bomb that his people placed on the Krogan homeworld (saying it was "ingenious"), before finally admitting that in the long run it was a bad idea.
↪ VENGEFUL - Though Garrus is mostly a friendly guy, if he feels you have betrayed someone, or acted in an outright criminal way, he can be downright ruthless. One example is when he and Shepard take on a corrupt C-Sec officer, and he threatens him with a broken neck (and while he won't follow through with his worst threats, he still doesn't hesitate to knock him out). Furthermore, unless the player character intervenes numerous times, he will not hesitate to execute a broken and unarmed man who betrayed his team in Mass Effect 2, and certain in-game files will reveal that he would often deliver karmic deaths to various criminals. In Mass Effect 3, he still demonstrates this mindset to an extent, evidenced if Shepard chooses to sacrifice the Geth (an entire species of AI), and he remarks that due to their past atrocities, they essentially deserved what happened.
↪ DISRESPECTFUL - A continuing theme with Garrus is his lack of respect towards authority (or "red tape" as he often calls it), especially when he believes that rules and regulations are getting in the way of him doing what he believes is the right thing. This is emphasized in Mass Effect Homeworlds, where he gets into an argument with his father over how the handling of justice within C-Sec. While this lessens somewhat over the course of the games, Garrus's stubborn nature, and dislike for "red tape" still remains evident under the surface (such as when he takes Shepard to the top of the Citadel for a friendly day out and/or date, telling them that he's gotten to the point where he just doesn't care about the regulations forbidding him from being there).
↪ ROMANTICALLY CHALLENGED - Of particular note to this setting. Though he can have romantic interactions with three different women on different playthroughs of the game, Garrus can often be incredibly awkward and clueless when it comes to flirting and dating in general. He never realizes a doctor's crush on him despite being teased about it by at least one crew member, and doesn't realize Tali might've been flirting with him until she essentially spells it out. When an unromanced Shepard tries to get him a date, he first seems more interested in talking firearms (declaring that what he really needs is a silencer for his sniper rifle), and then uses some truly horrible pick-up lines on the woman ("Do you come here often? I imagine anyone who does is probably an alcoholic"). And throughout his romance with a female Shepard, there are constantly "paragon interrupts" (essentially, quicktime events that allow Shepard to perform heroic actions) to help him along in more intimate situations.
Character Fears:
While he'd say that there's not much that can really throw him off his game, Garrus's biggest fear is probably failure, and letting down those that he cares about. He expresses to a romanced Shepard that for once he'd just like something in his life to go right.
Powers/Abilities:
↪ TURIAN: Physiologically, humans and turians are on similar ground (though turians are based on a different set of amino acids and as such, generally cannot consume human food). However, their semi-metallic carapace allows them to withstand greater levels of radiation than humans.
↪ SHARPSHOOTER: Thanks to his training in the turian military and C-Sec, Garrus is proficient with both sniper and assault rifles. He is particularly talented with the latter, having his aiming skills lauded by various characters throughout the series.
↪TECH EXPERT: In addition to his weapons training, Garrus is also a formidable combat engineer. This includes the ability to overload various enemy systems with the use of a device called the omni-tool. His expertise also gives him the ability to decrypt encoded data, fix various bits of machinery, and (perhaps infamously) calibrate a ship's weapon system to the point that an AI was amazed by his work.
As any abilities he has are either natural, or come from his tech, nothing would likely need to be nerfed at this time.
Personal Item:
While he will be feeling a little bit empty inside without his sniper rifle, Garrus will be taking along his omni-tool, which can also be used in lieu of a network device, in addition to its tech abilties. Besides, he can use this opportunity to brush up on his hand-to-hand combat.
On a related note, also try to get his super cool modified visor and insist that it's just like glasses, or something.
