That's exactly what the Council- our galaxy's governing body kept saying until a few months ago.
[ oh, right. different universes and all that other fun stuff. must be nice to live in a world with no Reapers.
(though... he supposes that now he's in one without them so... victory?) ]
They were a whole race of these semi-organic sentient spaceships that lurked out in dark space. Except when they came around every fifty thousand years or so to wipe out all advanced sentient civilizations in the galaxy. Shepard... the human that I mentioned, tried to warn everyone, but they wouldn't listen. I went back to Palaven- my homeworld, to talk to my dad. Shockingly, he did, and used his influence to help get me a task force.
[ a sigh. ]
We weren't as unprepared as some of the other species, but it still wasn't looking great.
[ Gamora is actually attentive as she listens to Garrus speak, taking a few slow sips from her water as he explains the debacle with these so-called Reapers.
… It definitely doesn’t sound good. ]
By that, do you mean the Storm came while you were still fighting them?
[ it's ok, Gamora. he's met plenty of people with less than awesome social skills. hell, some might include him in the ranks. ]
Yeah. Third planet in the Trebia system. It has... had [ did he mention how much this storm thing sucks? because it really sucks ] some pretty nice beaches, a bit of a weak magnetic field, and two really nice moons.
[ because you know what? he does actually love hearing about other cultures (much to his friends' chagrin). it gives people a chance to share. ]
My species, the turians, got into space a few thousand years ago. For a while, we thought we were the only advanced species in the galaxy until a couple of the others made first contact with us, and asked us to use our military to win them a war.
[ Gamora listens intently, actually interested because she’s never heard of his planet, knows nothing of his species, so she’s content to quietly sip her water and let him speak. He has her full attention, too – no attempts to look disinterested or bored. ]
Interesting. Did these form long-standing alliances?
Actually, yeah. We ended up being the third species ever to join the Citadel Council for our service. It just so happened we really did have the best military in the galaxy.
[ he actually sounds a little proud of it. ]
I mean, there were some species that weren't too happy about it, [ namely, the Krogan... genophage and all... ] but, there's not really too much you can do about it, is there?

[ and he realizes this whole time, he hasn't actually given her his name. smooth, Vakarian, real smooth. ]
By the way, my name's Garrus.
[ maybe not the most natural change of subject, but... ]

[ She’s great at this polite-exchanging-of-names thing.
(She is not.)
She nods in a sort of… overall gesture, indicating his form. ]
You mentioned your planet. Palaven?
[ They don’t have (as far as she’s aware) any of what Garrus is in her universe. ]
