[ She gives him a look, a confirmation (because, yes, she does mean "abducted"). ]
He thrived with them.
[ But he would have been happier with his family, she's sure. He's told her so many stories of his life on Earth, bits and pieces here and there, and she's loved it all, but... it makes her sad, too, knowing what had been stolen from him. ]
[ sometimes, Garrus really does forget how fortunate he'd been (though, given some of the people he hangs out with regularly, he really shouldn't). sure, there was what happened with his mom, and the fact him and his dad butted heads a lot, or him really not always being the most reliable older brother, but his childhood had always been pretty normal. ]
It's probably not easy, being the only member of your species out there in the galaxy.
[ something that he's going to slowly be adjusting to himself, but hopefully not for too long. ]
that silence is noticeable, and a part of Garrus wants to ask her about that. but, despite his occasional tendency to say or do the wrong thing, he knows when it's not a subject to push someone on. so he decides that he should drop it for now. if she's anything like another last of their kind alien that he knows, he really doesn't want to get thrown out of an airlock.
and more importantly, it would be rude to ask a question like that to someone he just met. ]
I'd been away from home for a while, back home, before I finally went back a few months ago. It's not an easy thing to do, but it was kinda nice. Until the Reaper invasion, but I guess that's all in the past now.
[ at least everyone's safe, even if they're not awake. that's just something he has to remind himself. ]
[ Gamora closes the fridge, leaning back against it as she opens her water.
She appreciates the fact that he doesn't pry (considering she doesn't even know his name, and Gamora is far from the sharing type), though she doesn't say a thing about it. The fate of her people is no secret back home, but... this isn't her home. People don't know her here – or hopefully fewer do – because she's yet to be pinned as the infamous assassin and daughter of a madman, and she'd like to keep it that way.
She doesn't deny her past, doesn't try to smother it, but she doesn't see why she needs to spread it around, either. ]
That's exactly what the Council- our galaxy's governing body kept saying until a few months ago.
[ oh, right. different universes and all that other fun stuff. must be nice to live in a world with no Reapers.
(though... he supposes that now he's in one without them so... victory?) ]
They were a whole race of these semi-organic sentient spaceships that lurked out in dark space. Except when they came around every fifty thousand years or so to wipe out all advanced sentient civilizations in the galaxy. Shepard... the human that I mentioned, tried to warn everyone, but they wouldn't listen. I went back to Palaven- my homeworld, to talk to my dad. Shockingly, he did, and used his influence to help get me a task force.
[ a sigh. ]
We weren't as unprepared as some of the other species, but it still wasn't looking great.
[ Gamora is actually attentive as she listens to Garrus speak, taking a few slow sips from her water as he explains the debacle with these so-called Reapers.
… It definitely doesn’t sound good. ]
By that, do you mean the Storm came while you were still fighting them?
[ it's ok, Gamora. he's met plenty of people with less than awesome social skills. hell, some might include him in the ranks. ]
Yeah. Third planet in the Trebia system. It has... had [ did he mention how much this storm thing sucks? because it really sucks ] some pretty nice beaches, a bit of a weak magnetic field, and two really nice moons.
[ because you know what? he does actually love hearing about other cultures (much to his friends' chagrin). it gives people a chance to share. ]
My species, the turians, got into space a few thousand years ago. For a while, we thought we were the only advanced species in the galaxy until a couple of the others made first contact with us, and asked us to use our military to win them a war.
[ Gamora listens intently, actually interested because she’s never heard of his planet, knows nothing of his species, so she’s content to quietly sip her water and let him speak. He has her full attention, too – no attempts to look disinterested or bored. ]
Interesting. Did these form long-standing alliances?
Actually, yeah. We ended up being the third species ever to join the Citadel Council for our service. It just so happened we really did have the best military in the galaxy.
[ he actually sounds a little proud of it. ]
I mean, there were some species that weren't too happy about it, [ namely, the Krogan... genophage and all... ] but, there's not really too much you can do about it, is there?

The one that I know was taken from his home planet as a child by a group known as Ravagers.
[ She thinks it over, and then clarifies, ]
Space pirates.
[ Though that’s mostly oversimplifying everything the Ravagers do, but this will do. ]

[ he's definitely heard and seen plenty about space pirates, in his time at C-Sec, on Omega, and aboard the Normandy. ]
I can't imagine that would've been very fun for him.

But he lost a good deal.

Gamora doesn't speak at first, turning back to the refrigerator to pull out a bottle of water for herself. ]
No. It's not.
[ And that's what she's been for so long. She had nothing, no one left, but, at least Peter— ]
His home was still intact, but he never decided to return.
